Marina Marković - 2011 DB Mangelos Award winner

On Friday, June 24th at Zvono Gallery in Belgrade, "Dimitrije Bašičević Mangelos" Award for 2011 exhibition was opened by Marko Stamenković, the member of the Jury who publicly announced that the this year Award winner is Marina Marković.

Featuring also short-listed finalists: Zorica Čolić, Nataša Kokić, Goran Micevski and Slobodan Stošić.

About the finalists selection and Marina Marković, award winner, from the statement of the Jury:

'Dimitrije Bašičević Mangelos Award does not confer the "best" artist of the younger generation in Serbia. It is, above all, presenting the idea of ??survival of contemporary art in an environment where contemporary visual art is the least important, least profitable and least needed (in fact, it is quite superflouos and unnecessary) form of ??social activity, because the space where the works of these artists (photographs, installations, videos, documents, texts, drawings) have been created and where they now reside is a symbolic space of an orphanage, simply because their ways of thinking, acting, creating and surviving are often abandoned and left alone.
Besides the fact that this Award provides the winner with professional six-week residential stay in New York, along with winners from other central-eastern European countries, it is important to note that in the present context it can not and must not be promoted and given for achievements in the sphere of production, exhibiting and media-attention; it should and has to be awarded to non-existent, invisible, irrelevant and non-functional activity in the society it is created in: for the non-existent, invisible, non-functional and irrelevant sound of dust (Stošić), the body eating itself up in a cannibalistic ritual of self-preservation of the human species (Marković) for the gaze projectiong all its hopes and dreams (and the gazes of everyone who has left, or stayed, or still do not know whether to leave or stay), towards a cold, gray, horizon (Kokić), for the thought hiding behind the sun under a black rectangle in constant motion (Čolić), or hiding from the law on tre backdrop of a typical provincial living room, again somewhere in the north, where, 'heroic' still lives are grown instead of plantations of forbidden plants (Micevski).

In the strong competition of five finalists, selected by the jury, it was decided that the Dimitrije Bašičević Mangelos Award for 2011 should be awarded to the finalist that that meets the requirements of this year's open call in the most convincing manner. What does this mean? If the basic requirement of continuous and encompassing art practice that problematizes the relationship of the individual and society through the artistic relationship between the viewer and an art object (or the lack / absence of the object), is fullfiled; and if the artwork is the best mirror of the atmosphere and climate in which the image of a society is formed and shown - or is excluded from its own existence and no longer wants to be shown, deletes itself, by consuming itself in suicidal and self-destructive gesture of the paradoxical, simultaneous emergence and disappearance, and if, above all, there is a concrete, realistic and challenging project plan for the stay in the cultural environment of New York, then it is not surprising that the idea of ??survival of contemporary art and modern man depends on the body that eats itself away at self-cannibalistic ritual of self-preservation of the human species. Dimitrije Bašičević Mangelos Award for 2011 is awarded to Marina Marković.'

"Dimitrije Bašičević Mangelos" 2011 Award Finals, Zvono Gallery, Begrade, 20:00

Zorica Čolić, Nataša Kokić, Marina Marković, Goran Micevski and Slobodan Stošić

"It is certain that this ‘European’ current viewpoint does not deal with everyday rhetoric of the long-awaited, promised, positive or negative integration with a political construct  popularly and officially called the European Union. The actuality of a European gaze, as one of possible ways of recognising individual artistic practice of each of the five finalists for the 2011 ‘Dimitrije Bašičević Mangelos’ Award (Zorica Čolić, Nataša Kokić, Marina Marković, Goran Micevski and Slobodan Stošić) - but also all of them together - consists (in my opinion) of the following: the constant, determined, programmatic and poetic refusal to accept the codes and ‘laws’ of recognisable, worn-out, politically-correct and historically ‘relevant’ (therefore ‘desirable’ and ‘appropriate’) cultural matrixes from which ‘there must be no deviation’ should one desire to achieve success in the art scene today (any art scene for that matter, be it in a poor, provincial, ultimately politicised and bureaucratic, yet at the same time extremely pretentious and stubborn environment such as the Balkans).

...

The space where the works of these artists (photographs, installations, videos, documents, texts, drawings) have been created and where they now reside is a symbolic space of an orphanage: simply because their ways of thinking, acting, creating and surviving are abandoned by the environment where contemporary visual art is least important, least profitable and least needed (in fact, it is quite superfluous and unnecessary) form of social activity. In this constant haze (where the utterly utopian strength of their thoughts materializes in practice), an award for artistic endeavours  cannot and must not be promoted and given for achievements in the sphere of production, display or media-attention - it should and has to be awarded for the non-existent, invisible, non-functional and irrelevant activity in the society it is created in: for the non-existent, invisible, non-functional and irrelevant sound of dust (Stošić), for the body eating itself up in a cannibalistic ritual of the self-preservation of the human species (Marković), for the gaze projecting all its hopes and dreams (and the gazes of everyone who has left, or stayed, or still do not know whether to leave or to stay) towards a cold, grey, northern horizon (Kokić), for the thought hiding behind the sun under a constantly-moving black square (Čolić) or hiding from the law on the backdrop of a typical provincial living-room, again somewhere in the north, where ‘heroic’ still lives are grown instead of plantations of forbidden plants (Micevski)."

Curatorial workshop: Towards Curating as a Critical Practice

First call for applications
Curatorial workshop: Towards Curating as a Critical Practice
27th - 28th April 2011
Novi Sad, Serbia

We are pleased to launch an open call for applications for a curatorial workshop targeted at individuals who have started a career
in contemporary art as curators, writers or critics. This workshop will be part of the 10 years of D.B. Mangelos Award program (YVAA network) and is aimed at starting a dialogue about contemporary artistic/curatorial practice in S/CEE region.

The workshop will take place in Museum of Contemporary Art of Vojvodina, Novi Sad, Serbia on 27th and 28th April 2011 (Wednesday and Thursday) and is organized by Remont, DEZ ORG and Ilija and Mangelos Foundation.

Towards Curating as a Critical Practice

Context outline:
Is there such a practice as a critical curating and what would it assume? In today's conditions of cultural and knowledge production and general flexibilization and professionalization of labor, it could be said that particular figure of a curator lives its expanded role as a cultural producer. Indeed, the role of a curator in contemporary production of art&culture goes way beyond mediation of art works towards the audience, since it includes variety of activities ranging from basic conceptualizing and mounting of the exhibition, to handling complex institutional network of relationships and financial logistics. Curators' role today is expanded indeed, but that expansion also comprehends imperative to network, to improve managerial skills, to communicate and cooperate, which is pointing out a new form of professionalization in cultural field of post-fordist labor market. That position often encompasses ambivalences which are present in practice of curating as a representational, an intermediary strategy
between art world and society's power structures/institutions. On the other hand, the curatorial practice is very much involved with theoretical reflection, with knowledge and knowledge production, and it is rich with a potentiality, as a point of access to engagement in political aspects of society. Last but not least, although loaded with different influences, what should be remembered as a bottom-line of this particular practice in the art world is curator's responsibility towards audience and the public.

Two-days long workshop in Novi Sad will try to open space for discussion among younger generation of curators from South East Europe, by enrolling and challenging theoretically on what they observe and do in the field of contemporary curating, and on whatcould be done. The discussions among curators and art critics will be accompanied with lectures and conversations with renowned international and regional curators and art theorists, which will serve as a further discussion booster. The workshop aims to map wider context of contemporary curating practice and to try to imagine discursive alternative strategies to it by answering the question: Is there such a practice as a critical curating and what would it assume?

The workshop will be led by art critic Branka Ćurčić.

Branka Ćurčić is a writer, art critic and program editor in the New Media Center_kuda.org, Novi Sad (kuda.org), since 2002. She graduated Fine Art and Theory of Art and Media (MA) in Novi Sad and Belgrade, Serbia. In the Center_kuda.org, she is the editor of publishing project (kuda.read), which is focused on examining critical approaches towards new media culture, new cultural and political relations, contemporary artistic practice and the social realm. With a special interest in art in public space Dražić in her work focuses on the search for the abandoned, forgotten spaces in the urban structure of modern cities exploring their transformation, microhistories, transformation and rethinks them at the level of cultural continuity, symbolic irregularities and individual actions. In Dušica Dražić’s production concept and form are of the equal importance in opening the work for its multi-layer interpretations, that is, for developing new ways to the observer. This current, relevant artistic practice places Dušica Dražić in the line of very dedicated, serious and already formed authors, whose opus reflects the consistency in the analysis and questioning of the issues that are in the focus of her artistic research."

The Dimitrije Bašičević Mangelos Award will be awarded for the nineth time this year. The main attributes of this prize denoting its significance for the local milleu are a precise conceptual outline, the principle of selection and continuity. Due to the lack of organised logistics and support brought about by alienation or removal of art and culture in general from the strategically relevant areas of social activity, contemporary Serbian production has entered the stage of minimalised, elementary survival. It had an impact on all the artists, particularly those who have only just established their position in the art scene or were preparing to do so. Insofar, the Dimitrije Bašičević Mangelos Award has gained importance over time as one of the few points of expressive intensity making the production of the younger generations’ artists visible.

Ivan Petrović, Documents, at the Museum for Contemporary Art Salon i Belgrade

Documents
Salon msu
11 November, 2009 - 6 December, 2009

Opening of the exhibition: Wednesday, November 11th 2009 at 7 P.M.

During two periods of time (1997–2003 and 2005–2008), in a number of parallel courses, emerges Ivan Petrovic’s body of photographs joined under the title Documents.
What binds these photographs into a new and complex whole is not the theme around which they originated, but above all: “… a need to present, by way of revising one’s own archive and its fresh patterning, a possibility for a more integral comprehension and interpretation of given circumstances and events; to perform a kind of inquiry procedure and to insert, into official statistics, something called personal drama…” (Petrovic).
Shaped as a whole from a number of heterogeneous series, which are numerically dominated by portraits, they are also bound by the fact that they appeared in Serbia, in the ambiances of the artist’s immediate surroundings, in social circumstances of general aggression and pressures and that as such, somewhat anticipating the precariousness of upcoming periods, are now obtaining a new place in reading and interpreting of contemporary public and social circumstances.
After ten years of following and recording situations and events, family and friends, there emerged several hundreds of photographs. By its large number and consistency, this body tends to give an integral picture of the artist’s surroundings in the given period, of the social circumstances and the life of students in Belgrade (mostly his acquaintances from Krusevac), of the life of his artist friends, including his two-and-a-half-month stay in Kosovo in 1999 during the NATO bombardment of FR Yugoslavia. The body also contains the photographs of confiscated objects that Petrovic took in the archive of the Municipal Misdemeanor Court in Krusevac, as well as the photographs of a duplicated photograph album found in Kosovo…
This archive of photographic material of sorts Petrovic uses as a resource, on the one hand, to provide an integral picture of his surroundings, which he has been observing for some years past. Besides, he always differently and afresh arranges them in space and groups them into “clusters” and new wholes, constructing in this way special micro-narratives, through which he reexamines the connection between the document and the narrative at the base of it.

The Young Visual Artists Awards program (YVAA) is an international award program for young visual artists in Central and South Eastern Europe organized by affiliates in ten countries in the region and The Foundation for a Civil Society (FCS). Since 1990 this annual program with national exhibitions and awards, which now includes residencies at the International Studio and Curatorial Program in New York, has been organized in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Serbia, Slovenia, Albania, and was newly established in Bulgaria.

For the third time in the history of the YVAA program the artists awarded within this international program will be presented in a joint exhibition and on this occasion, the organizers prepared a symposium on common topics. The first two such events took place in Prague in 2005 and in Pristina in 2006. Both of the events in Belgrade will bring together artists and arts professionals from the countries of the region and guests from the rest of Europe and the United States. Among them are Christian Rattemeyer, Curator, Museum of Modern Art in New York, Miguel Amado, Curator and Contributor to Artforum.com, Francisca Zolyom, Board Member of tranzit.hu and Director of Institute of Contemporary Art in Dunaujvaros, Hungary, Amb.
