Dimitrije Bašičević Mangelos Award


HISTORY OF THE AWARD

The Foundation for a Civil Society (FCS) with affiliates in ten countries in Central Europe and South East Europe has organized a major international residency award program for young visual artists in the region (YVAA).
This unique program was established with President Havel and a group of artists in Czechoslovakia in 1990. Since then this highly successful annual program with national exhibitions and awards, culminating with a six-week residency at the International Studio and Curatorial Program in New York for artists under the age of 35, has now been expanded from the Czech Republic to Slovakia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Serbia, Slovenia, Albania and Bulgaria – Hungary and Romania – are currently in negotiations. A total of 78 young artists have been awarded so far and for all of them, the receipt of the award marked a significant change in their careers.

As part of this project in 2002 Center for Contemporary Art together with The Foundation for Civil Society founded Dimitrije Basicevic Mangelos Award. From 2006 to 2010 organizers of the Award were Artist association DEZ ORG and KONTEKST Gallery and in 2007 they introduced new contest segment – production of artworks. In 2010 The organizing team has been changed. Remont - Independent Art Association from Belgrade and Ilija and Mangelos Fund from Novi Sad joined DEZ ORG and KONTEKST Gallery withdrew from the organization.

Organization of the Award includes the implementation of five programs:
1. Organization of the open call and the exhibition of Awards finalists (up to five artists)
2. Organization of six week residence program for the artist in the International Studio and Curatorial Program (ISCP) in New York, NY, USA
3. Production (of up to five) artworks selected through the open call of the Award
4. Organization of group exhibition and promotion of the artworks produced by Mangelos Award
5. Organization of the solo exhibition for the Award winner, after return from the residence.

Winners of the Award Dimitrije Basicevic Mangelos until 2011 in Serbia are: Bob Milosevic (Sausalito, CA, 2002), Vladimir Nikolic (NYC, 2003), Milica Ruzicic (NYC, 2004), Milena Gordic (NYC, 2005), Sinisa Ilic (NYC, 2006), Katarina Zdjelar ( New York, 2007), Ivan Petrovic (NYC, 2008), Ivana Smiljanic (NYC, 2009) and Dusica Drazic (NYC, 2010).

Artists whose works were produced through Awards' Open Call 2007 - 2010: Natasa Kokic (2007), Daniel Prnjat (2007 and 2008), Marko Stojanovic (2007), Dragana Lukic (2007), Katarina Zdjelar (2007), Nikola Markovic (2008), Andrea Palasti (2008), Marija Djordjevic (2009), Paula Muhr (2009), Ranko Travanj (2009), Tanja Jurican (2010), Ivana Popov (2010) and Natasa Tepavcevic (2010).
